SA MAJESTE DES MOUCHES

The story :

A group of eleven teens are stranded on a desert island without grown-ups. During the play we can see how they organize their life on the island, and the separation between two groups. Their adventure changes into a nightmare after the arrival of a strange monster.

The staging :

At the begining of the play, the behaviour of the actors is very childlike, they laugh a lot, they dance and they play rugby…But Ralph becomes more responsible, whereas Jack and his group become increasingly wild. They often climb up a climbing wall, they move a lot, it’s very physical. At the end, their bodies are painted, they sing and they dance,it makes the play more violent.

What we particulary liked about the performance :

We enjoyed the way they played, the actors were adults but they were like children. We liked the story in general, and the evolution of the characters.

What we disliked :

On the left it was a little bit difficult to see the whole stage. Rémi didn’t like the play, but on the whole we found it good.

WHAT WAS GOLDING’S AIM WHEN HE WROTE THIS NOVEL ?

Golding wrote this novel after World War II to denounce the war and savagery in the world. He wanted to show that man can easily become wild. He wanted to show the negative effects of the war on children. He wanted to convey a message : Organized society is better than barbarity and savagery, secondly, solidarity is the key to liberty and democracy.

Let’s not forget the horror of the war !

The story :

The story deals with British children who are marooned on a desert island.

The children divide themselves into two groups :

- the first whose leader is Ralph. This group is organised and civilized and they are represented by the conch.

- the second whose leader is Jack, they are hunters and their aim is to hunt the pig but unfortunately they become wild.

The two groups fight each other and the second kills two people of the first group.

At the end, a ship notices the signal fire which was lit by Ralph’s group and they are all saved.

Costumes :

At the beginning they were dressed like British students but then, they took off their uniform to be more relaxed : they were half-naked.

The lights :

The lights represented day time when they were turned-on and the night time when they were turned-off. And when a child was killed, they changed into red.

,The lights often helped us to understand who was playing because sometimes the two groups were together on the stage but playing different parts of the story, so the lights focused on the most important characters.

The scenery and props :

The scenery represented a beach (sand, ocean...) and on the right, there was a climbing wall which represented the mountain.

There weren’t many props, the second group just had poles which they used to kill the pig. There was also paint which was used to represent blood.

We particularly liked that the way the actors played because we think that playing children’s parts it’s not very easy. And we enjoyed the fact that it was children who were marooned because it’s original to see children stranded on a desert island. Moreover the performancewas not too long.

But unfortunately, we disliked the global story because "hunting the pig" is not very interesting and we think the story is too much centred around an imaginary monster.

“Was the theatre adaptation faithful to the book version ?”

“Most of it was, but Jack’s behaviour wasn’t so wild at the beginning of the book.”

“What was your favourite scene ?”

“My favourite scene was when the actor played with a little plane, like a small child.”

“I agree, because this scene represented the plane crash.

It was a very good idea to represent a real plane crash.”

“The children characters were played by adults.

Was it difficult for the actor to adapt ?”

“The gestures of the children were very well imitated.”

“Do you think the music and the sound played a prominent role ?”

“The music and the sound are very important to understand the story.

These tools brought an atmosphere of suspense during all performance.”

“What is the moral of the story, according to you ?”

“In my opinion, the moral of the story is that when people are marooned

on a desert island, they become wild and they change their behaviour

because there aren’t any rules and they do what they want.

On a desert island, democracy doesn’t exist at all.”

“Did you like the end ?”

“Yes, the end was good.

But it finally became brutal because Ralph died in this island for staying with the other boys who were killed there, and Jack, Sam Eric and Roger were rescued by boat.”

The play

“What was the scenery of the play made of ?”

“It was made of wood and there was sand.”

“How was it organised ?”

“It was a half-circle, like a skateboard ramp with a climbing-wall on the right. It was used as a mountain and behind it , the actors had access to the dressing-room.”

“Were the colours used to express something particular ?”

“The background of the scenery was blue, like the sky.”

“Were there coloured lights ?”

“Yes, there were red-coloured lights, when someone died.”

“How was the island represented ?”

“In front of the half circle, there was sand and water and it represented the beach and the sea. The audience also represented the sea.”

“Did they play any music ?”

“Yes, they did. There were songs of war and rage. There was thunder at the beginning of the play and drums. When someone died, there was a woman’s song. There were sound effects for the waves and when the plane crashed.”

“Did you like the scenery and the music ?”

“Yes, we did, because it was well-done and impressive.”

Salwa : Why are the children on this island ?

Robin : They were evacuated from Britain by a plane but the plane was shot down over the island.

Bianca : What did you think about the story ?

Soraya : It was funny and shocking at the same time because some of the boys killed their friends. In fact it was a fabulous story.

Salwa : Did you like the interpretations of the actors ?

Robin : The interpretations of the actors were original because the actors are adults and they played the parts of children.

Bianca : What did you think about the name of the play ?

Robin : When the children were on the island there were two murders among the children and the title represents this death. The flies wihich are in the skull represent death and destruction between the children.

Dylan and Kathleen who did not see the play interviewed Florence and Morgane who gave them their impressions about the performance.

Dylan and Kathleen : Were the costumes beautiful ?

Florence and Morgane : Yes, at the beginning, the actors were wearing schoolboy uniforms. At the end, they were dressed like wild people.

Dylan and Kathleen : What did the beast look like ?

Florence and Morgane : The Beast was the head of wild pig which was stuck on a pole, and it looked like a piece of cloth.

Dylan and Kathleen : Was the music nice ?

Florence and Morgane : The music was composed by women’s voices and tribal songs created and played by the boys.

Dylan and Kathleen : Were the boys’ roles played by teenagers or by grown-ups ?

Florence and Morgane : Although the boys were played by adults, they played their parts very well because they had a childish behaviour, especially Piggy.

Dylan and Kathleen : Who died in the performance ?

Florence and Morgane : Simon and Piggy died in the performance.

Simon was looking for the beast, then the hunters killed him by error.
